The brief: To design a logo and user interface for an app that connects back-packing travellers via hostels.

Travelling and backpacking is an organic spontaneous phenomena whereas the technology used to build apps is structured. We wanted to bridge the gap between these polar aspects of the idea and create something that back-packers would use. We started by using un-structured typography and continued to ‘break the grid’ where ever we could.

The chat featured custom hand-written emojis that replaced conventional typing. Four unique profiles were designed to look like scrap-books and travel journals. Small tabs were made to look like post-its that one uses for lists while on the move.
